Monday holiday

Here in Canada, it’s Thanksgiving, nicely placed on the calendar to allow the local harvest to get to the local table. In much of the US, Christopher Columbus gets his day, while Berkeley’s having a pow wow to honour Indigenous People’s Day.  Dexter Construction, however, is not taking the day off: the street is abuzz with digging, dump truck loading and honking and men stomping gravel from their boots when they get to the sidewalk.

It’s cold enough out to count as autumn, making my early morning walk to Halifax Seaport brisk.  The sunrise was worth the frozen hands.

Then there was the matter of finding an open coffee shop.  So my thanks goes to the folks staffing Uncommon Grounds this morning, where the lights were on, the coffee ready and the smiles easy.
