More prosaic pursuits

With such things as SIN, the bank, the phone, etc. in hand, it’s time to move on tt daily life niceties. Like a clothes horse for wet laundry.

My family (perhaps even the dog) does a collective eye roll at my reluctance to use clothes dryers. I have nothing against using them for YOUR clothes, if that’s how you want them dryed, but I prefer mine to air dry. Among personality quirks, this is perhaps one of my more minor. Nonetheless, it means that I have to hunt down such a rack here in my new home.

Striking out in the few stores I’ve found that have evening hours (I am working daytimes, after all, and no weekend has yet occurred since my arrival), I was wondering if I would have to pile laundry into week 2.

Then I learned about Canadian Tire. In spite of its name (which, frankly, had kept me from darkening its door), it is a kind of general dry goods place, somewhere between an ACE hardware and a Sears. You can even buy socks at Canadian Tire. And I could–and did–find a clothes rack! So, one step closer to completing my new nest, or dive, or….what do you call a home with a purple shower curtain? (It’s a very purple purple–like a small child’s crayon version of juice).

I’ve learned from a coworker about the truly high importance of the Remembrance Day holiday this Sunday and now know that nothing will likely be open either Sunday or Monday (the legal version because of the weekend occurrance of the 11th this year). So, now’s when to gather up those household items and then is when to work at home….

I found a swell pub for supper last night: Henry House could be in Berkeley or Bourton-on-Water, and I’m glad it’s here, with its inclusive menu (fish cakes and beans, shepherd’s pie, OR black bean burger), good wine list, and nice little single malt list as well. The house it’s in is pre-Explosion by almost 100 years, and the clientele seems to run from singletons with books (not just me) to families, to work meetings that have spilled into supper time. Perhaps, I need to give it another go tonight.

So good to hear of someone else who dries their clothes rather than using the dryer. My clothes rack dates from my college days and still has the stains from drying madras–that dates me! I love reading of your settling in to life in Halifax, though I could probably do without the purple shower curtain and the artificial flowers. The intent is very dear. Pam
